Predoctoral Interdisciplinary Research Training Program in the Education Sciences
»The new interdisciplinary predoctoral training program at the University of Michigan is designed to train doctoral students to conduct causal research on the effects of education policies on student outcomes and how to convey research findings to policy-makers and practitioners. The training program will primarily include faculty and students from the School of Education, the Ford School of Public Policy and the Department of Economics.
Over the course of the five-year grant, the University of Michigan will offer fellowships to approximately 19 social science doctoral students. Fellows that enter the training program after one year of doctoral study will receive four-year fellowships, while fellows that enter the training program after two years of doctoral study will receive three-year fellowships. All fellowships will include tuition and benefits, a $30,000 stipend, and a small research fund.
PhD students in the University of Michigan training program will participate in an interdisciplinary core curriculum consisting of coursework in quantitative methodology, causal inference, and education policy. Fellows will also participate in ongoing research apprenticeships with faculty mentors, including at least one year-long apprenticeship in which fellows conduct research in partnership with education practitioners or policymakers. The training program also includes an interdisciplinary research colloquium and a research workshop.
