The Science Writing Heuristic (SWH) Post-doctoral Fellowship

The Science Writing Heuristic (SWH) Post-doctoral Fellowship grant provides two years of training and hands-on experience to four post-doctoral fellows from science, special education and statistics. Educational and applied experiences are tailored to fellows’ needs to ensure each scholar acquires the skills necessary to conduct rigorous education research and develop competitive Institute of Education Sciences (IES) grant proposals.

Program sub-objectives center on 5 key areas: (1) Increased knowledge of applied research methodologies, grounded educational theoretical models, and statistics; (2) Practical experience applying skills to large scale Random Control Trials (RCTs); (3) Study development and implementation addressing a unique research question within the context of large scale research projects; (4) Joint authorship of empirical studies and conference presentations; (5) Development of a goal 2 or 3 IES grant proposal.

Post-doctoral fellows participate in the following research and educational activities:(a) Audit up to 4 research methods and statistics courses; (b) Workshop completion in science education, special education and grant writing; (c) Assume a leadership role in a RCT; (d) Co-author a minimum of 3 studies that are either under review or in press by the end of the fellowship; (e) Present at a minimum of 3 national science, special education and/or statistics conferences.
